Queen Elizabeth II Health Sciences
Centre Dedicates Burn Unit to Firefighters
April 30, 1998 marks a special day for the Nova Scotia
Firefighters Burn Treatment Society and all Firefighters
in Nova Scotia. In recognition of the dedication and
support of the Nova Scotia Firefighters Burn Treatment
Society, the Dartmouth Firefighters Ladies Auxiliary, and
the Nova Scotia Power Corporation Employees Charitable
Fund, the Executive of the Queen Elizabeth II Health
Sciences Centre has dedicated the burn unit at the new
Infirmary site;
"The Nova Scotia Firefighters Burn Care
Centre"
At a special ceremony in April 30, 1998, Nancy Margenson
of the Queen Elizabeth II Foundation praised the work and
commitment that all three groups have made to the Burn
Unit. In thanking all three groups she acknowledged the
contributions that each group has made to the Burn Unit;
The Nova Scotia Firefighters Burn Treatment Society has
contributed $290,000.00, the Dartmouth Firefighters Ladies
Auxiliary contributed $115,000.00, and the Nova Scotia
Power Corporation Employees Charitable Fund has
contributed over $50,000.00.
Dr. Justin Paletz, Head of the Plastic Surgery Department
at the Queen Elizabeth II Hospital, spoke about the
improved treatment and better survival rate that victims
of burns now have because of the advanced equipment and
training that these groups have provided.
Nora-Gene Goodwin, Nurse Manager for the Burn Unit , gave
details of some of the improvements that have been made
over the past several years in burn treatment, many of
which are directly related to the projects such as the
Skin Bank which was established by the Nova Scotia
Firefighters Burn Treatment Society.
Firefighters across the province will now know that anyone
using this facility will be aware of the support and
dedication that the Firefighters have made.
